Understanding Zopiclone

Zopiclone is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic medication, often referred to as a "Z-drug." It is specifically designed for the short-term management of insomnia and sleep disturbances.

How It Works

Zopiclone works by binding to GABA-A receptors in the brain, similar to benzodiazepines but at a different site. This enhances the effects of GABA, the brain's primary calming neurotransmitter, producing sedative and sleep-inducing effects.

Dosage Information

The typical dosage varies depending on age and individual response:

  • Adults: 7.5mg immediately before bedtime
  • Elderly (over 65): 3.75mg before bedtime
  • Maximum dose: 7.5mg per day
  • Duration: Short-term use only (2-4 weeks maximum)

Always follow your doctor's prescription instructions. Take only when you can get 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects may include a bitter or metallic taste in the mouth (very common), dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and nausea. Some people may experience next-day drowsiness or a "hangover" effect. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel drowsy the next day.

Precautions

  • Do not combine with alcohol (increases sedation and risk of breathing problems)
  • Long-term use may lead to dependence and tolerance
  • Do not stop suddenly after long-term use—taper off gradually
  • Inform your doctor of all other medications you are taking
  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Use with caution in elderly patients (increased risk of falls and confusion)
  • Do not take unless you can get 7-8 hours of sleep
